Fitness Femmes: Base Body Babes

If you don’t know who these two glamorous pocket rockets are – well – you’re probably not addicted to Instagram (like we are) and clearly not obsessed with superfood green smoothies (like we are) because these two have both those things nailed.

Diana, 29 and Felicia, 30 had the ultimate career change having started their roles in interior design and primary school teaching. But with the support of a loving family and an unwavering determination, these two turned their love of fitness, clean eating and keeping fit into an international empire. Last month the Base Body Babes opened a stylish bespoke gym on Sydney’s North Shore (Ground Floor, 73 Miller Street North Sydney) that boasts a delicious superfood smoothie bar and stunning designer zen-like bathrooms! With almost 300,000 followers on social media, blogger awards, inspirational career journey and abs to die for these two gorgeous sisters are the ultimate fitness and lifestyle femmes. We love this hilarious, vivacious and passionate duo so much – we want their family to adopt us. No like, seriously. Call us.

La Femme Mecca Base Body Babes InterviewWHAT DO YOU DO AND WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT?

We are the sisters and owners behind Base Body Babes an online personal and nutrition training business. We have just opened our first gym @basegym in North Sydney which also has a nutritional cafe. We love what we do. We love empowering women and encouraging positive messages about food, fitness and nutrition. Ultimately we just love making women feel better about themselves. Better about their bodies – better about life.

WHAT HAS YOUR CAREER JOURNEY BEEN TO DATE?

Felicia and myself (Diana) are really close – we always have been. In fact, we are only 15 months apart! But we’ve always loved training and fitness and health but actually we had backgrounds in design and early childhood teaching! When Felicia had her baby, we really saw the need to refine how women bounced back from having babies. We saw there was a need – an education required for weight training, fitness and nutrition particularly for mums (and women) so we started outdoor training and boot camps and it all stemmed from there and ultimately became our full time focus.

WHAT IS YOUR EDUCATION / STUDY BACKGROUNDS?

Diana was in teaching so did a Bachelors of Teaching and Felicia was in Design so had done a Bachelors of Design. But when we became committed to fitness we really became educated and informed about the industry and took on fitness study and training from the Fitness Institute Australia (FIA). They have flexible study options as well and we are now actually FIA Ambassadors.  We really recommend the FIA for anyone looking to enter the fitness world as its a very credible institution that offers a range of programs and courses.

WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND SOMEONE WANTING TO GET INTO A FITNESS PROFESSION OR START THEIR OWN FITNESS BUSINESS?

Obviously it’s important to be educated in that space – you have to learn the science and the basics of physical education (and nutrition) if you think the two are related. You need to know how to consult with clients and understand the fitness principles to training. As for starting your own business – it’s a very competitive space so it’s important you set yourself apart. Mark your brand, find your own voice and commercialise that.  For us we had a lot of successes carving our own brand through social media and having a dedicated online strategy, particularly important when an element of our business was online training – but this really enabled us to have such broad reach and extend our customer base not only in Australia but all over the world. Also finding a mentor or someone to coach you and hand hold you is also key. My husband Sebastian Oreb (one of Australia’s most experienced strength coaches) is exactly that to us and BBB – he is a really credible experienced fitness figure and we have learned a lot from him. He has been crucial to our development and we are so grateful to have that.

HAVE YOU HAD MOMENTS OF CAREER UNCERTAINTY?

Look – of course we all have bad days and when you are building a business it can be tough juggling it all but for us, we are doing this together – we are a family and we are always here for each other. We back each other. So, on days of uncertainty we just encourage and support each other but also we are so passionate about what we do. We really love helping women. We love food and fitness and enabling people to live their best possible and healthiest lives so it was natural to us to be motivated to build something and to be ambitious.

WHAT PART OF YOUR JOB DONT WE SEE ON INSTAGRAM?

Oh lots. We are really big ambassadors of sleep and rest – we say this to our clients a lot! But the reality is we sometimes don’t get a lot of this. So you don’t really see our 3am wake-up calls, early boot camp sessions, working round the clock to get things finished and done (particularly for the new gym). We love being styled and sports fashion but sometimes when you are running around juggling everything that can be hard to do it all full of energy. So I guess sometimes you don’t see that with personal trainers and the realities of the job (and being a working mother).

WHATS YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE?

I think it is definitely opening a gym – our gym. It’s been a dream and a huge undertaking so to make it a reality after being an online and outdoor business has been fantastic. But also, every day we work with clients and the feedback we get and the amazing people we get to meet and work with every day is also really awesome.

HAS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS CHANGED FOR YOU OVER THE COURSE OF YOUR CAREER?

I think when you get a bit older and you have family responsibilities and/or children of course that changes. Family becomes really important and finding that balance between your work and loving what you do and family can be challenging sometimes. But we wouldn’t change it. Having the gym now as our new base has really allowed for our family to stay closer together and work together  it’s like our home away from home. So really, striking out on our own has allowed that to happen and be successful across both worlds.

HOW DO YOU MANAGE STRESS / ANXIETY / WORK LIFE BALANCE?

Haha – well not that well! No I mean.. of course we have bad days – tough days, trying to juggle it all. We’ve been really good at learning how to adopt healthy time out – meditation has also really helped with refocussing our energy. We also find that surrounding yourself with good friends and family who you trust and who support you no matter what is also vital to us. Our mum is also our rock. Her support is relentless. Even if we have sisterly clashes and fights…mum is always there, bringing us back together reminding us to support and love each other – which we do! But if you have a sister you know what we mean – we love it (and each other) we’re really lucky.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR BASE BODY BABES?

Well, our focus is really on opening the gym and getting the cafe done and all happening. It’s been a huge undertaking and its so incredible to finally have a BBB destination for all our supporters and clients so we cant wait to get that rolling. We believe in doing what makes you happy – so we encourage everyone to do the same – get out there and follow your dreams.

WHAT 3 WORDS WOULD YOU USE TO DESCRIBE YOURSELF?

We are strong, passionate, happy and fun! (thats four but there are two of us!)
