Vicki Engsall: Natural Skincare Queen

We love discovering natural beauty products at LFM so when we heard about The Jojoba Company an Australian made and owned production we were itching to chat to Vicki Engsall, daughter of Founder, Ian Engsall.

Vicki saw an opportunity to grow the business and the passion she shares with her Father, from the original rural crop and began to expand her knowledge of the business. Together, they sought to create a unique skin care range promoting the skin health benefits of their own natural Australian jojoba farmed and produced at home. With a strong focus on anti-aging and skin vitality, the range includes 100% Natural Jojoba which is great for your hair, skin and nails…You Beauty!

WHAT DO YOU DO AND WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT IT?

I research, formulate and create beautiful natural skin care with the help of our wonderful formulators and marketing team.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO START YOUR OWN BUSINESS?

My Dad owns a jojoba farm and I could see the amazing benefits of jojoba. I wanted the world to know about it and use it.

WHAT IS YOUR EDUCATION / STUDY BACKGROUND?

My background is in education. I did a Bachelor of Education and was a primary school teacher for many years. Since then, I have done various courses on ingredients, natural therapies, regulations and formulations in the cosmetics industry – an area I have grown to love.

WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND WOMEN STUDY OR DO TO BEST EQUIP THEMSELVES TO GET INTO YOUR INDUSTRY?

Naturopathy would help in the natural skin care industry, but I think you would need some kind of marketing as well to help communicate the benefits of your product.

WHAT WERE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU’VE FACED AS GROWING BUSINESS?

Having a beautiful product but not having the industry contacts to help us get it out there.

WHAT’S BEEN YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT?

As a company, our greatest achievement would have to be creating our beautiful natural skin care range based around jojoba – the first in the world to do it!

WHAT IS THE BEST BEAUTY PRODUCT YOU’D RECOMMEND?

The product I love the best from our range is our Ultimate Jojoba. It is 100% natural, is full of vitamins, antioxidants and fatty acids, smells divine and really gives great results for your skin.

WHAT’S THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU’VE LEARNT FROM A MISTAKE YOU’VE MADE IN THE PAST?

Do your research!

HAS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS CHANGED FOR YOU OVER THE COURSE OF YOUR CAREER? WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO YOU NOW?

Even though my career has had a total change of direction, my definition of success hasn’t changed at all. Success for me as a teacher was making a difference in the children’s self-esteem and lives that I taught. Success for me in natural skin care is making a difference in people’s skin which usually makes a huge difference in their lives and self-esteem.

REFLECTING ON YOUR CAREER TO DATE, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOURSELF AT THE BEGINNING?

At the beginning of my skin care career, I would say the advice I would have given myself would be not to compare yourself to others. Be confident with what you have created and who you are.

HOW DO YOU MANAGE STRESS / ANXIETY / WORK LIFE BALANCE?

I don’t really get stressed or anxious, I think that is because if I have a problem I talk, talk and talk to everyone to get it out. I don’t bottle anything up. I walk every day with my dog and I find that any stress that I have goes while on my walk with my gorgeous dog. Work life balance is hard. I need to consciously switch off and resist checking my phone for emails and messages when I am home and with my family. Once my son goes to bed, I let myself check my messages and emails.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU / JOJOBA BUSINESS?

We are growing our business all the time and have just launched into the US so there are big things ahead for us.

WHAT THREE WORDS WOULD YOU USE TO DESCRIBE YOURSELF?

Outgoing, empathetic, passionate.
