OUR FAVOURITE BABES FALL VICTIM TO SOCIAL MEDIA HACKING: How do we stop it?
Two of the biggest names in the health and fitness industry Felicia and Diana from Base Body Babes fell victim to one of the largest social media hacking scams we have seen to date over the weekend and subsequently have lost over half a million followers from their widely popular Instagram account @basebodybabes
These young passionate fitness femmes were interviewed by La Femme Mecca a few months ago as we found their rise to stardom to be an inspirational and motivational story. In addition to their gorgeous sport luxe looks and toned physiques, these girls also built a strong business in online training and nutrition through their website www.basebodybabes.com and recently opened The Base a beautiful bespoke gym for trainers in Sydney’s North Sydney suburb.
But in the early hours of Saturday 18th July 2015 – all of this came to a crashing halt as they fell victim to a major hacking heist via their Instagram account @basebodybabes. Felicia tried to view her profile that morning and realised she had been logged out and the password wasn’t working. Viewing the account via her husband’s phone, they then saw that all of their beautifully curated images were systematically being deleted and the account was changed to @dailyfitnessbabes which, over the last few days has since changed names several times.
Whilst the girls rallied online support over the weekend and the story has been covered via major news channels it left their total breach of account privacy and loss of thousands of loyal followers in the wind – which no doubt would have had major impacts on their business.
The fantastic news we received this morning is that Instagram immediately went into action and reinstated the account and recovered their images. Whilst the girls are thrilled at all the overwhelming support from their loyal followers and from Instagram HQ – it still sheds light on the risks of having such successful and major social media accounts when the threat of being hacked is still very real. We never want to see our favourite fitness femmes (or any femmes) hard earned business in jeopardy again, so we have put together some key tips below on keeping your details safe and sound.
The girls have created another @basebodybabes account which you can show your support by following and hashtagging #bringbasebodybabesback. Jump online to follow and show your support for these babes and let’s show these pathetic hackers that their scrupulous attempts were done in vain.
It’s important to continually update your passwords regularly. Keep a note in your phone with the new passwords to help you keep track – but this is one way to keep the hackers guessing.
It can be easy in business to hand over sensitive passwords and information particularly as your business grows. But try to be mindful of who has your account details and keep the access to that information limited so that it minimises the risk of information leaking.
This is a tough one given how often most of us are either on Instagram or uploading our favourite images. But try to get in the habit of logging off on your tablet or phone so that people can not gain easy access into your account. Close it off at night, before you head out or any other time you are not physically posting an image.
Make sure you always have a password on your phone so no one can log into your phone should you accidently lose it or have it stolen. It’s hard enough we have to deal with cloud hackers so make sure the access to your account is blocked at your end. This will keep your Instagram safe and probably every other program of yours safe that you have open on your phone.
