If like us you spend a lot of time travelling for work then staying fit on the go can be a difficult unmotivating exercise…. As busy femmes it can be hard to find the time to get to the gym in a new city, sweat it out and meditate in the mornings when you’re racing to meeting after meeting (not to mention battling jetlag, dehydration and very tempting room service menus…!) So on our most recent Femme Travel tour to the states, we joined forces with new activewear brand Violent Orange so we could motivate ourselves (and you!) to stay fit and stylish whilst travelling abroad.
New York & Los Angeles
Whether it was hiking the Canyon in WEHO or skipping the streets downtown in meat-packing district of New York – we found quick and easy ways to squeeze in time for our minds and bodies. Finding the inspiration to apply some easy fitness exercises were made all the easier with Violent Orange’s sports luxe creations and we were motivated to hit the hills and pound the pavement in both Los Angeles and New York!

Travelling for over 24hours through bustling airports and confined plane spaces can compromise anyone’s immunity and energy levels, so it’s important to prioritise comfort when we travel. We loved and lived in Violent Orange Marracesch Yoga Pants in grey and Fluro Summer Lovin Hoodie which are super comfy for a long haul trip (or lazing around the hotel pool!) without distracting from your travel look.

GO FOR A DIVE
LA and New York have some of the best rooftop pools that guests have access to from 6am. Staying at The Chamberlain Hotel in West Hollywood meant we could easily do a few laps in the morning before breakfast. Even if it’s half an hour of freestyle, its the perfect way to feel refreshed and revitalised after a long international flight. With amazing blowdry Dry Bars on every corner there’s no excuse to not getting your hair wet either! And with these on trend dark ink animal print and mesh leggings you’ll have a stylish sportsluxe look every morning….
MEDITATION & MINDFULNESS
It’s so important to take time out every day to find a quiet spot and get centered before your day begins. This is just as important as fitting in exercise when you travel. Whether it be in your hotel room, by the pool or in a garden take a minute or two to deep breathe and prepare yourself mentally for the day ahead. If you are not experienced enough to meditate on your own, we recommend using a guided meditation video or an app on your phone.
While we fully encourage morning swims and Vitamin D for travel revitalisation…We also recommend a morning yoga session as a less intense fitness workout. With rooftop pools in LA there’s no need to pay for expensive Yoga studio passes as there are lots of guided yoga apps or iPhone YouTube videos to take you through some basic beginner poses on your own. Stretching it out after a long flight is also great for toning your body and helps avoid sore muscles.
THE STAIR RUN
Need something more active than Yoga? Then finding a set of stairs in New York is no problem thanks to the traditional brownstones scattered around the West Village. And luckily for you, the streets are shaded with trees for those that hit the city in the hot summer season. While out for your daily run or walk – step it up a notch with a set of stair runs at every few set of stairs you come across. This is a quick and easy way to get the heart rate up and burn off those calories from the night before..
PARK AVENUE BENCH SQUATS
If you feel like you are heading out for too many dinners and lunches every day, then doing 4 x sets of bench squatting can be one of the most rewarding toning exercises for your buttocks when you’re over doing the daily calorie intake as it burns fat faster. Try standing and sitting for 12 reps whilst switching your core on. This will get your blood pumping and fat burning.
Are cabs breaking your bank and taking you off your feet?Then NYC is the best place to keep sight seeing and fitness as one exercise. New York provides hired bikes on almost every block, giving you no excuse to take cabs! Not only will you be moving your body but you will also get to see much more of this fabulous city. Pick up a bike and cycle to brunch or lunches. You could head up to Central Park and reward yourself with a beautiful Boathouse brunch on the way back. Pair the Violent Orange Frankie Overtop with luxe leggings for a look you can ride and lunch in!
BENCH STEP UPS
To work those leg muscles and to get them long and lean, take a little break from your city walk and take advantage of those park benches! Do standing leg rises on the same leg for 12 reps over 4 sets. This will get your calf and thigh muscles burning in no time! And break up your morning walk….
CHAIR PUSH UPS
With interesting parks and play areas scattered amongst the city, it’s not hard to find a bench or ledge to stop and do some arm work. You can do tricep dips and push-ups quite easily, just make sure your technique is correct. It’s important to keep your body as close to plank so you can tone your arms and your obliques at the same time.
Finally, whether you’re away for work or pleasure try to squeeze in your daily cleansing juice for vitamins and nourishment. Fortunately LA is a mecca for the next big health craze so healthy options are readily available. Our favourite for a quick juice? Urth Caffe in West Hollywood. What more could you ask for than an outdoor table, fresh juice and fabulous people watching on Melrose Ave?
